Tsavorite

An Emerald-green variety of grossular Garnet, Tsavorite is one of the most popular and expensive varieties of Garnet. Tsavorite was named after the Tsavo East National Park in Kenya, but was actually first discovered in Tanzania in 1967. Tsavorite’s rise is popularity was heavily influenced by a marketing campaign by Tiffany & Co. in the 1970s that promoted it as an alternative to Emerald. The popularity and rarity of Tsavorite has sky rocketed its prices in recent years.

Tsavorite is commonly found in small sizes but their value goes up significantly with size, with pieces over two carats being rare. Tsavorites with deep green, Emerald-like colour command the highest prices. Unlike Emerald, it often exhibits far fewer inclusions, and on occasion can be flawless. The main sources of Tsavorite are the Scorpion mine in Kenya and the Merelani Hills in Tanzania. The gemstone was also discovered in Madagascar in 1991.
